Endocrinologists are the logical experts for supporting transgender patients and their primary care providers with regard to logical strategies for hormone therapy.
That’s the message Joshua D. Safer, MD, FACP, hopes to convey during his Meet-the-Experts sessions on Thursday.
Dr. Safer, who is the Executive Director of the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS) and senior faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, said “While there are few transgender-specific data, surrogate experiences from other groups allow the endocrinologist to envision strategies for hormone regimens for transgender persons.”
Not only does he hope to facilitate conceptualizing transgender hormone care as the domain of endocrinologists, he plans to demonstrate how expertise in endocrinology can be leveraged to provide quality guidance to patients and to primary care providers.
“The cases covered in the session will highlight gaps in knowledge but also approaches that might be considered by those already facile with hormone management for other medical purposes,” he explained.
Session Notes: T11 and T42: Strategies for Transgender Hormone Care: The Endocrinologist as Expert 2:15 pm on Thursday in Room 311, repeating at 3:30 pm Thursday in Room 311 Elizabeth Holt, MD, FACE, will serve as moderator.
